A milestone for science education in Samoa

In a significant stride towards enhancing science education and fostering innovation in Samoa, the IMAGINE Science Samoa Project was officially launched in Malifa this week.

Marking a historic moment for Samoa as it was the first science center ever to be established in the Pacific, the initiative aims to establish a pioneering technology and discovery center dedicated to engaging students, families, and the public in Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Maths (STEAM) activities.

The brainchild of Ruth Moghbelpour, the IMAGINE Science Samoa Project is the culmination of a 12-year endeavour driven by a profound commitment to science education.

Supported by a coalition of individuals and organisations passionate about nurturing the next generation of innovators, the project seeks to democratise access to S.T.E.A.M. education, emphasising its relevance to individuals from all walks of life.

At the heart of IMAGINE Science Samoa's mission is the recognition that S.T.E.A.M. subjects are not confined to academic silos but are fundamental to fostering critical human qualities such as curiosity, problem-solving, and a love for learning.

Whether one aspires to be an engineer, a teacher, a farmer, or a parent managing household affairs, the project advocates that S.T.E.A.M. literacy equips individuals to lead meaningful lives and contribute to societal advancement.

The multifaceted approach of IMAGINE Science Samoa encompasses a range of initiatives aimed at both formal and informal education settings.

Outreach programs conducted in schools feature captivating science shows and interactive sessions, designed to spark curiosity and inspire the next generation of scientists and innovators.

The Science and Technology Centre serves as a hub for interactive displays, showcasing the wonders of science, technology, and traditional knowledge in engaging ways.

A key pillar of the project is the development of hands-on resources aligned with the Samoa Primary School Science Curriculum, empowering teachers to deliver impactful S.T.E.A.M. education in classrooms.

Through collaborative efforts with stakeholders such as the Ministry of Education and Culture and the National University of Samoa, IMAGINE Science Samoa endeavors to strengthen local technical capabilities and address community development needs.

The journey leading to the launch of IMAGINE Science Samoa has been one of perseverance and collaboration.

"Today, as we launch the Imagine Science Samoa Project, we are reminded of the shared aspirations and ideals that unite humanity," said Ruth.

"Across the globe, people yearn for equality, justice, and a society built on moral and worthy human qualities. However, amidst these aspirations, there exists a profound need for effective solutions to the challenges we face.

"The complexities of our world often leave traditional schools of thought overwhelmed and unequal to the task. We stand at a crossroad, facing a profound crisis that destabilizes and disrupts the order of our world.

"Despite these challenges, there are many among us who earnestly seek solutions and strive for positive change. They are driven by a deep sense of goodwill and a sincere desire to remedy the afflictions that encompass humanity.

"The Imagine Science Samoa Project embodies this spirit of hope and determination.

"The story of Imagine started 12 years ago as a response to a need articulated in the Samoan Observer, that science was not a subject that primary school students were not choosing to study in secondary school. Having just graduated with a post-graduate diploma in Not-for-Profit Management, I made the decision to form an N.G.O. the Education and Science Foundation Charitable Trust for the purpose of establishing an interactive science and technology discovery centre. All members of this Trust are present today."

Ruth Moghbelpour, alongside a dedicated team, navigated challenges and garnered support from diverse quarters, both locally and internationally.

"Our next task was to speak to potential Stakeholders which included the Prime Minister and Government of Samoa, Educational Institutions – MESC, NUS, USP, UNESCO, Diplomatic Missions in Samoa – Australia, NZ, Japan, Chile, other NGOs – SPREP, Samoa Conservation Society, Institute of Engineers, Private Sector businesses, and the general public.

"Even though 98% of those I met with had never visited a science centre and had little knowledge of them, there was 100% support.

"In 2018, we received a telephone call from Dr Graham Walker at CPAS at ANU in Canberra asking if IMAGINE Science Samoa would like to partner with them in Science Circus Pacific and funded by DFAT Australia.

"For 4 years we established a predecessor to this science centre at Selprize in Vaitele, where we conducted training of the IMAGINE team, held science shows and STEM resource for teachers, and provide Outreach programs to schools.

"In 2021 an opportunity was provided by RNZWCS and RCA to develop an Activity Design to continue this work on a larger more permanent scale.

"Once funding was established the IMAGINE team consisted of a small group of dedicated individuals to whom I am truly grateful."

Generous contributions from organisations such as MFAT New Zealand, Rotary New Zealand World Community Service, and AusAID have been instrumental in turning the vision of the project into reality.
