School goes tech-friendly to improve
A school is witnessing a significant increase in students' performance and engagement as a result of a software that allows parents to be part of their children's academic journey.
Church College Pesega uses the PowerSchool programme, which was financed by Church leaders to assist make studying more convenient.
Parents are among the most significant factors in a child's development. This is a result of their capacity and authority to actively engage in the educational process, shaping and developing their children into motivated, creative, and understanding adults.
Conversely, parents who do not engage in their children's education are simply viewed as being irresponsible and discouraging their children.
PowerSchool is a programme that’s available to all the Latter Day Saints schools around the Pacific region that allows parents and students to view their grades, track attendance, and generate reports. Parents can print report cards, view grades, and communicate with teachers to discuss their child's progress.
In an interview with Samoa Observer, Laura Jahnke, vice principal of Pesega College, said this platform had greatly aided them in forging deep bonds with parents and working together to give students the finest education possible.
According to Mrs. Jahnke, although the platform was around for a while, it hasn't been actively used. However, she claims that it was helpful during the pandemic and has since significantly improved students' discipline and increased parents' involvement in their children's assessment because it updates each student's performance regularly.
“This software enables teachers to monitor student attendance, submit grades, and generate reports, allowing parents and students to review their progress throughout the term," she said.
“It allows parents to track their children's attendance in each class, print their report cards and see their children’s grades and instructor marks.
“Powerschool has made it easier for parents to consult their children's development with their subject teachers.
"It is a blessing to be able to have this technology, it has made work easier as a parent, teacher and administrator.
Jimmy Leausa a Maths teacher for Year 10 and 11, and Applied Maths for Year 13 said the programme has become an extremely vital tool in aiding teachers in the classroom.
"PowerSchool makes life as a teacher in Pesega sustainable, and our load easier. Mostly in some specific areas that play an important role for us teachers and, especially the students,” he said.
"It's a great software that benefits parents and students, so they can track progress before the end of the term, and better for teachers where we don't have to write on report cards, but just enter it in the software and with the click of a button, the computer calculates and sorts grades.
