A preschool for children survivors

The children survivors of violence sheltering at the Campus of Hope will soon have a preschool of their own, thanks to long time friends, Pacific Assist.

As it is, only 20 per cent of children in Samoa attend preschool and chances get lower if they are children who are away from their parents because they are survivors of violence and abuse inflicted in their homes.

Pacific Assist, a charitable organisation has kindly donated funds to help facilitate the preschool and support the children at the Campus of Hope.

Preschool for the children is something that the president of Victim Support, Siliniu Lina Chang, stated that they have always desired for the children, and it will accomplish one of their main objectives by providing not only refuge but also early education for the children at Campus of Hope.

Callum Blaire, the director of Pacific Assist, stated in an interview that the preschool is something that has been missing at the Campus of Hope.

He said getting it done would provide the kids an opportunity to get ahead in life before they enter the real world. Mr. Blaire added that the preschool has always been the organisation's primary focus.

"These kids here we known have gone through huge challenges but it’s inspirational and they’re mentally tough and they deserve a future," he said.

"It’s an honour for us to be able to give to the people of Samoa, particularly the Campus of Hope and we have come in to help facilitate that future.

Mr. Blaire estimates that the project will take several months to finish, with October of this year as the anticipated completion date. He also added that volunteers from New Zealand will also be brought in to assist with all the building work.

Siliniu expressed gratitude to Mr. Blaire and Pacific Assist for all of their contributions to Samoa Victim Support over the years, stressing how fortunate they have been to have support from both the local community and SVSG's international partners.

"Pacific Assist has helped the Campus in a lot of ways, and we are forever grateful to these people for recognising the children, especially and for bringing joy into their lives," she said.

In the meantime, 88 child victims are currently being housed at the Campus of Hope, accompanied by a growing staff of over 10.
