New Zealand will help Samoa to host a successful Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting and has committed NZ$3.5 million to develop and offer a new degree at the National University of Samoa, the Bachelor of Health Science, which opened for enrolment last week.

Aotearoa will help Samoa with security, healthcare, education, development and economic growth as the two nations renewed their Statement of Partnership on Friday morning in Apia.

New Zealand has also committed $30m over five years has been committed for a second phase of the Polynesian Health Corridors programme.

The release of the Statement of Partnership came after a bilateral discussion involving Prime Minister Fiame Naomi Mata'afa, Vaovasamanaia Winston Peters, and New Zealand's Minister for Pacific Peoples and Health, Dr. Shane Reti. The two New Zealand government ministers rounded up their Pacific Mission tour with Samoa.

The Statement of Partnership was last signed in 2019, with the interesting coincidence that Vaovasamanaia also signed that statement representing the Government of New Zealand.

Speaking to the press following the meeting, Fiame emphasised the importance of the meeting, presenting a chance to reconnect, refresh, and reassess areas of collaboration between the two countries.

The Statement of Partnership according to Fiame includes a new kind of partnership reflecting on areas of cooperation for the next five years.

The Statement of Partnership highlights five key areas: Partnership, emphasizing the strong historical connection between Samoa and New Zealand; Security, aiming for a safer Pacific community; Empowering Communities, focusing on enhancing people-to-people connections and improving public services such as healthcare, education, and governance; Building Climate Resilience, addressing climate change impacts; and Inspiring Growth, promoting regional trade and resilient economies.

“New Zealand and Samoa are like-minded countries who share a very warm and close relationship. We enjoy close co-operation on bilateral, regional and global issues,” Vaovasamanaia said.

He added that the Statement reaffirms New Zealand's dedication to assisting Samoa in hosting a successful Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting [CHOGM] this year.

The upcoming CHOGM gathering is anticipated to be the largest international event ever hosted by a Pacific Island nation. Head of the Commonwealth and British monarch, King Charles III is among the expected attendees for the October meeting in Samoa.

However, it remains uncertain whether these arrangements might have been altered in light of his recent cancer diagnosis.

Vaovasamanaia and his delegations also visited the National University of Samoa (N.U.S.) and paid a courtesy visit to the Leader of Opposition, Tuilaepa Sa'ilele Malielegaoi and members of the Human Rights Protection Party (H.R.P.P.) later on.
