A pathway has been made for more local cyclists to participate in international competitions as the Bike Samoa Federation has been endorsed by SASNOC, joining the Oceania Cycling Confederation and the world cycling body.

Bike Samoa Federation President Philip Moore said this would open up opportunities for them to further develop the sport locally.

“Long-term goals, I would love to see some of our people ride in the Tour de France one day. Get selected by the pro teams. We've got some talented cyclists here in Samoa, with more coming. They just need the right training and support. Be given the chance to go to races overseas and get more experience," he said.

Vice-President Darren Young explained that the previous cycling federation had focused on overseas-based cyclists.

"Last year they sent riders from the United States and New Zealand to represent Samoa at the UCI World Cycling Championships in Glasgow, and to the Pacific Cup in Tahiti. While it's good to have Samoa there, we want to see the funding for cycling be used to grow our local riders."

Along with developing the standard of Samoa's top-level cyclists, the BSF also wants to grow a strong bike culture in Samoa.

"Cycling is for everyone. All ages and levels of experience It's great for fitness and wellbeing, enjoyable for the whole family," said Nalei Paul, the BSF Secretary.

"But on our group rides, we see some impatient drivers that can make cycling dangerous. The more our people get used to seeing cyclists on the road, the better. We'd love to see Samoa have bike lanes and pathways, lots more of us feeling safe enough to bike to work and school."

Bike Samoa has regular group rides every fortnight and they invite all interested members of the public to join them. Find more information on their Facebook page or contact Philip Moore at Coffee Roasters Cafe.
