Ship stranded on Apia Beach
Strong waves and currents forced a fishing boat to break away from its moorings at the Matautu Wharf and drift towards the shore on early Tuesday morning as it ran aground on the shores of Apia Beach.
Motorists and members of the public crowded the seawall to catch a glimpse of the grounded vessel. The fishing ship is owned by a local company, Apia Deep Sea Fishing (A.D.S.F.).
The ship also sustained damages mostly on its' hull as it struck rocks about 10 meters from the seawall.
A Filipino worker who was onboard told the newspaper that it was a scary experience.
It is believed that there were other workers on board when the incident happened. They said they were lucky that the boat did not capsize and sink.
Samoa Observer tried to seek a comment from the owners of the shipping company but they refused to speak.
A couple who was amongst the crowd who went for a morning run came across the capsized boat. They said they saw the boat being washed towards the seawall earlier than 4 am.
"We were on our way towards Sheraton for our usual morning jog and we saw the boat coming this way and we thought it would be alright but by the time we got back around 4 am, it was at this situation and the poor workers were on the boat looking shocked and worried," Laumata Lameko said.
Samoa Observer understands that this was not the only boat that was wrecked by the strong ocean currents. Yachts tied up near the wharf were also heard colliding with each other around the same time in the morning according to Mrs. Lameko.
"We heard noises of boats clashing with other boats and we thought it wouldn't come to this dramatic incident so we feel sorry for the workers," she said.
