It was a trip to see relatives in Falealili but Bennona Leleimalefaga and his three children had to stop and collect rubbish scattered at the newly opened scenic stop at Le Mafa as it had piled up and become more than an eyesore.

The family discovered all kinds of litter including someone leaving behind breads plastic, different kinds of bottles, as well as a sack of taro which were still fresh.

In an interview with the Samoa OBserver, Mr. Leleimalefaga said they could not go past the deck without doing something about the rubbish.

"What I understand is, we do know what we should do but we don't do it and as the bible says, those who do this are sinners and it takes what they show on the inside to know what is inside and in their homes and this was what my mother told me that even if a place is beautiful but if you don't clean it then a clean faleoo is better," he said.

"We were on our way to Falealii as we spend every weekend there. This is always our route from Apia to Falealili and this is the first time I saw so much rubbish being dumped at that area where tourists stop over to take photos and it was an eyesore.

"I could not keep away from what I am used to doing at my own home and this is what I have been teaching my children on a daily basis to always stay neat and healthy and keep our home clean all the time.

"We mostly waste our time complaining about this and that but when it comes to these little things we don't do it."

Mr. Leleimalefaga urged the nation to work together to keep Samoa clean as it is everyone's responsibility.

"May we treat everything especially these assets of our country as our own and keep it clean so it can be used for a long time because this is our money which the government is using to build these things and to make our country beautiful.

"Let the sides of our roads tell how beautiful our nation is to the world and how neat we are so please let's work together on our responsibility to keep Samoa clean.

"After you eat your snack, leave your plastic rubbish or can in your vehicle and take it home but do not treat the main road as your rubbish bin."

Mr. Leleimalefaga's post attracted the S.T.A employees who acknowledged him for his great work as well as his children, as well as over 500 people on social media who said he is setting a great example for many.

He and his children cleaned up the whole place, collected the rubbish in plastic bags, and took it in their car.
