Former NRL player gets Laupu'e title
Former Samoan rugby league footballer, Vila Mata'utia was bestowed the Laupu'e title from his family in Samauga, Savai'i last week.
The title was once held by his grandfather, Laupu'e So'oalo Vila Naimalo. He is the son of a former professional boxer, Matautia Poulava Akari of Vaimoso, Samauga, Satupaitea and Tafua Savaii.
Mata'utia, a former professional rugby league player from Samoa, had a notable career spanning the 1990s and 2000s.
Laupu'e has promised his commitment to the service of his family, village and nation during a moving ceremony.
His rugby league prowess extended to international competition, representing Samoa at the 1995 Rugby League World Cup. Additionally, Matautia played a significant role with St Helens in the Super League, contributing to their success in both championships and Challenge Cup Finals during his tenure with the team.
In the 1995–96 Regal Trophy Final on January 13, 1996, at Alfred McAlpine Stadium, Huddersfield, Vila Matautia served as a substitute, entering the game at the 25-minute mark to replace Prop Ian Pickavance, as St. Helens suffered a 16-25 defeat against Wigan. As champions of Super League V, St. Helens participated in the 2001 World Club Challenge against the Brisbane Broncos, where Matautia contributed as a substitute from the interchange bench in St. Helens' victorious performance.
In 2002, Matautia concluded his tenure with St. Helens and transitioned to join the Leigh Centurions.
Matautia proudly represented Samoa and participated in the 1995 Rugby League World Cup. Notably, he extended his rugby league involvement to the United States, actively contributing to their team's efforts to qualify for the 2000 Rugby League World Cup.
His connection to the United States team was influenced by his grandmother's Hawaiian heritage, and he dedicated his efforts to helping them secure a spot in the prestigious tournament.
Matautia's commitment to promoting rugby league extended beyond his home country, showcasing his passion for the sport on an international level.
