Over 30 new matai bestowed at Magiagi

The village of Magiagi was the scene of colourful celebrations on Thursday morning with more than 30 matai bestowals.

The occasion was the bestowal of eight different chiefly titles, namely Lupetaliaami, Ataga, Leuluaiali'iotofiga, Feagaimaleusoali'i, Segimua, Tulaousoali'i,Tiuaimamani and Muaauotauolevaimauga.

Held at the malae and maota i Aveave on Thursday morning, the auspicious celebration was attended by relatives, friends, and residents from Magiagi who gathered to witness the title bestowments. 

The individuals who were bestowed with new titles on Thursday are all progeny of Ataga Sale Bruce.

The High Chief of the family, Ataga Sarasopa Ah Kuoi told this newspaper that over 30 new titles were conferred on Thursday, with the ceremony being the first-ever title bestowments for orators (matai tautua) for the Chiefly title of Ataga. 

"The family decided it was time to confer oratory titles to members of our family as it has grown over the years," Ataga Sarasopa said. 

"So, this is the first time we've had a saofa'i for these titles."

He expressed his gratitude and acknowledged his extended family for their support and everyone who contributed to the success of the title bestowment ceremony on Thursday. 

Ataga also congratulated the new title holders and wish them all the best for the future. 

He also urged them to use the titles wisely to serve their families, village and the community. 

"As a matai, you are the caretaker of the family's assets, uphold culture and traditions, and make sure that the culture does not fade away. 

"Serve with humility and love. I wish you all the best and be bold and courageous, but most importantly, serve with love and put God first in all that you do."

The new title holders are: Lupemataliaami Alatise So'onafai, Ataga Sio. For the Leulua'iali'iotofiga title: Vaioletama, Iakopo, Pulusi, Ieremia, Penelope, Ayesha. 

For the Feagaimausoali'i title, the new title holders are: Felaua'e, Fa'auuga, Afula Uatisone, Ieremia, Paniani. 

Segimua: Fuatai, Nicky, Saolotoga, Tali, Sarah, Talitiga, Ioelu, Ati, Nepo. 

Tulaousoali'i: Malolo, Fu'a, Lagani, Siatua. 

Tiuaimamani: Saumani, Fa'apala. 

Muaautauolevaimauga: Liesl, Laiomanu, Johnwesley, Fa'aiva, Peter, Eti, Salati, Ne'emia, Fa'afua, Amosa, and Conrad.
