A Samoan family who left Samoa 30 years ago in search of a better life has had an emotional return to Samoa this festive season to celebrate with families and friends.

The Lafo family from Vaimea were amongst thousands who were at the seawalls of Apia and around the township area welcoming the New Year with fireworks organised by the government at the stroke of New Year 2024.

In an interview with the Samoa Observer, Maria Anastasia Lafo explained that the last time they were in Samoa was 30 years ago and they have come back for family and to renew relationships.

"It's a different feeling for our family this year having to come back home from New Zealand, we're here for the unveiling of both parents, so this is very important to us this New Year," she said.

"We are gathered here with everyone, my six siblings and our six children and their children so it's a good year for us to be here altogether because of these two.

Asked about the significance and purpose of family in their household for the new year, Mrs. Lafo said it's about treasuring one another and ensuring happiness in the family.

"Always, family is what matters and what is important like wherever you go, family or your home is what matters," she said.

"We prefer Samoa and our families here because it is where we started from although we are now based overseas, there is always that saying that goes, 'susue le faamalama ma toe tilotilo mai'

"We can never forget our beloved Samoa and wherever we go in this life or where life may lead us, we will always come back to our roots and our home Samoa."

Mrs. Lafo was with her husband Tanoai Mikaele Lafo and their children at the Apia seawall watching the fireworks display .
