The Samoa Police Prison and Correctional Services (S.P.P.C.S.) will be paid their on-call allowances for taking on the long shifts and working throughout the festive season says the top cop.

Police Commissioner, Auapaau Logoitino Filipo made the comments as he applauded his officers for doing a fine job during the Christmas holidays and as the Police extended their operation into this weekend.

He said his officers work because they have pride in their job despite not receiving bonuses or overtime for the work during the holidays.

In an interview with the Samoa Observer, Auapaau said the Ministry planned the foot patrols to boost the safety and security of the nation and to prevent crimes and accidents.

"It's all part of the plans of our festive season operation. This increases the visibility of police officers especially at night but we also do it at day time. We prioritise the night because there are still a lot of kids walking around who tend to cause trouble for those that come to town," he said.

"So, those are our plans for the festive season. We had been working on to ensure a safe festive season so that we can avoid having too many accidents and incidents."

The Police officers doing foot patrols will be seen starting their patrols from the town clock towards their allocated areas and this newspaper understands that one group walks towards Sogi and Mulinuu while some walk around the big businesses in town and cover the Savalalo, Fugalei and the Saleufi areas.

According to the Commissioner, the majority of the cases being reported to police involve alcohol where people are driving while under the influence or fights amongst drunkards.

"So far most of the cases being reported to us involve alcohol from the weekend. Police reported to calls about drunkards who do not know how to handle their alcohol or how to drink during the festive season," he said.

This year there has been one report of a fatality and this involved a man in his 20s whose body was found floating in the at sea at Nofoalii on Tuesday.
