Accident lands eight in hospital

Eight people were taken to hospital after a head-on collision between two vehicles on Saturday morning at Salelavalu, Savaii, two are still believed to be admitted in a serious condition. 

Video footage of the unfortunate incident showed bystanders and untitled men of the village helping the victims out of the two vehicles and taking them to the hospital.

Two passengers were seen lying on the side of the road while the others were being pulled out from one of the cars. The bystanders alleged that the driver of the Nissan Note was intoxicated. 

Samoa police confirmed that one of the vehicles was a red Nissan Note which was carting five people while there were three in the small mini van.

Police Commissioner Auapaau Logoitino Filipino told Samoa Observer, that one of the drivers is yet to be charged and is currently admitted at the hospital.

“The incident happened early Saturday morning and fortunately no one was walking on the side of the road and no other cars were passing by,” he said.

“As of this moment, no one is being charged but there will be charges laid soon. This is after one of the drivers is discharged because he sustained serious injuries from the accident.”

He confirmed that there were no casualties from the incident and one of three people rushed to the big hospital at Motootua was discharged, while two remain serious.

Meanwhile, the Police Commissioner expressed concerns about the rise in traffic accidents and appealed to drivers in Samoa to ensure that they adhere to the traffic laws of the country for their safety and that of their passengers.

The Police have also advised drivers to be wary of the wet weather conditions affecting the country and to drive slowly because of the poor visibility brought about by the rain. 

A special advisory are for those drivers who stay in flood-prone areas. They have been asked not to cross flooded roads.
