Samoan man appears in Australian court
A 34-year-old man of Samoan descent is accused of raping a teenager on the New South Wales Mid North Coast appeared in court in November.
The man, who cannot be identified, was formally denied bail at his first court appearance in Coffs Harbour Local Court.
According to media reports in Australia, police allege the man ambushed a 17-year-old at 7:30pm on Friday, November 10, at Arawarra Headland, north of Coffs Harbour.
Following an investigation, police travelled to a nearby camping ground on Sunday and arrested the man, who was later charged with sexual intercourse without consent and aggravated sexual assault.
According to court documents, police allege the man had condoms and lubricant on the premises along with a shirt, jewellery and other items described by the victim.
At the November hearing the prosecutor made an application for forensic analysis of fingernail scrapings and photographs taken by police at the scene.
That application will be heard when the matter returns to court later this month.
The accused, who is of Samoan descent, when appeared in court required an interpreter.
The man's legal representative told the court the accused did not have access to an interpreter before the court proceedings and was not aware of his second charge of aggravated assault.
"I am pleading with your honour, I have no understanding of what's happening — I don't know why I'm here," the accused said through his interpreter.
Supporters of the defendant were also present and pleaded with the judge to allow them to speak to him to explain his charges.
The man's representative said the accused intended to plead not guilty.
The man did not apply for bail and it was formally refused.
