Well-known season work recruiter Tuagataloa Joe Annandale who is the founder of the Falealili Poutasi seasonal work program is mourning alongside the families of four seasonal workers who died from a tragic incident in Australia adding it's a wake-up call for all seasonal workers.

In an interview with the Samoa Observer, Tuagataloa stressed the importance of seasonal workers in the development of Samoa's economy especially boosting the living standards of their families.

He emphasized that for their program which can recruit anyone outside of Falealili for seasonal work opportunities overseas, they ban alcohol and smoking due to these reasons.

"My sympathies to the grieving family," he said. "It's been a wake-up call for all of us ever since the start because 'o le fili a lea o le' labour mobility is alcohol and that's why we ban alcohol in our trips.

"We even extended our bans to smoking, not that it's whatever other reason but the reason is the cost. They go all this way to New Zealand and Australia but then they buy a packet of cigarettes which costs $40 and if you convert that to tala, that's a lot of money but they're just wasting that on tobacco.

"It's for that reason but alcohol, this is the exact reason why we ban alcohol for seasonal workers because now these poor seasonal workers have lost their lives.

"I can only suspect that alcohol was behind it. This is the exact reason why our seasonal program bans alcohol it can influence their decisions.

"We feel for their families that await them from their homes but don't need the advice even seasonal workers under our programme, don't need the advice but there are lapses that happen.

"They're a long way away from here but we can only set these rules for their good. Not ours but for them."

The four seasonal workers' bodies arrived from Australia on Sunday and were greeted with tears and heartbreak from their families. Their bodies or what remained of them were taken to the chapel at the airport for a special service.

The four men were in a car which lost control and hit a tree and burst into flames. None of the four were able to escape.
