A police officer who allegedly assaulted a woman earlier this month is being investigated by the Samoa Police following the victim's complaint against him, Police says.
The alleged attack was captured on video and circulated on social media.
In an interview with the Samoa Observer on Monday, the Acting Police Commissioner, Leiataua Samuelu Afamasaga confirmed that the officer is currently being questioned following the investigation and complaint lodged to police.
"I can confirm that the officer is currently being investigated following the incident and only when the investigation is done, then we can move to the next step," he said.
"But for now he's being questioned following the complaint which has already been lodged to police by the woman victim."
Samoa Observer understands that the police officer is still working despite the ongoing investigation as he was present at the Samoa College Old Pupils Association (S.C.O.P.A.) parade as one of the bicycle officers. He could not comment on the matter due to work policies.
Meanwhile, the complaint was lodged earlier this month by the woman victim supported by her family members who were present on the night the incident took place.
The officer was alleged to have thrown punches at the woman in front of the Cultural Centre in Apia while assisting other police officers make peace amid a fight in front of the Samoa Tourism Cultural Village on Friday night.
A video of the incident had gone viral where a night market took place and where the fight happened showing the young male police officer throwing punches and fighting a woman who was allegedly involved in the fight.
The woman's sister, Faynihanthia Fereti in a previous interview with this newspaper said the police got there when the fight was already over.
She said the officer allegedly pushed her sister constantly which prompted her sister to push him back and start the fight.
Samoa Observer tried to seek a comment from the Police Commissioner, Auapaau Logitino Filipo, Deputy Police Commissioner, Papalii MonalisaTiai-Keti, and the Minister of Police, Faualo Harry Schuster on the behaviour of the police officer at the time but were unsuccessful as they were overseas.
Meanwhile, some people who reacted and expressed their views on social media about the actions of the police officer called him out for his unprofessionalism and called on the Ministry of police to consider his actions and take disciplinary action.
