Nothing was going to hold back Ratu Alofau Rile, a Fijian-Samoan teenager from attaining his goals and it came to fruition when he was named the Seventh Day Adventist College's dux for the 2023 academic year.

It has been a challenging yet rewarding journey for Ratu Alofau having to cope with numerous challenges and the absence of his parents added a melancholy dimension to his triumph.

The 18-year-old was announced the college's top student during a prize-giving ceremony at the school compound in Lalovaea.

Ratu Alofau is a bright student who placed first in every one of his six courses of studies- English, Mathematics, Economics, Accounting, Computers, and Bible Studies. He frequently represented his school in national youth events, including poetry contests and impromptu presentations, to mention a few, thanks to his excellent leadership abilities.

In an interview with Samoa Observer, the top student attributed his success to his family in Fiji and to everyone who has been part of his journey.

“They had significantly contributed to my studies and with everything that I needed help with and I dedicated this milestone to every one of them who have contributed to my academic journey over the years. I am grateful for all the love, support, and encouragement."

"To my parents and extended family in Fiji, I did it and I hope I made you all proud. This is a token of appreciation for all their hard work and sacrifices for me over the years."

He then credited the Lord's guidance and protection upon him. He also acknowledges his Samoan family and friends who played a role in his journey.

"I am humbled and grateful for God's wisdom bestowed upon me. I would not have made it this far if it weren't for him."

Looking ahead, he is keen to broaden his strengths and capabilities in his field of study at the National University of Samoa next year. He hopes to secure a scholarship to study abroad and specialise in Computer Studies.

When asked to share his advice for the youth and upcoming classmates, he said: "There will be uneasy times and sometimes there's always so much going on which may affect our dreams and goals in life, and at the end of the day we have to go through it to get through it.
