As the nation observes the National Environment Week, the Samoa Ports Authority has thrown its support behind the incentive by introducing its Green Port Ambassadors.

The introduction of the Green Port Ambassadors and the first female Tugboat captain, Ioana Paulo Avefua was part of the Green Port Initiative Project launch held at the S.P.A. Hall, Matautu on Tuesday.

The Green Port Ambassadors are some of the port’s employees and representatives from port users.

The Minister of Works Transport and Infrastructure, Olo Fiti Vaai delivered the keynote address at the launching which was attended by Government officials and donor partners.

The Green Port Initiative Project is funded by the Asian Development Bank under the Enhancing Safety, Security and Sustainability of Apia Port project, in collaboration between the Samoa Ports Authority, the Asian Development Bank and Royal HaskoningDHV.

“The project aims to enhance the sustainability, resilience, and inclusiveness of sea ports under SPA, by implementing green port practices and policies in areas such as energy efficiency by using renewable energy, disaster preparedness and gender equality,” said Olo.

“These are aligned with the Transport and Infrastructure Sector Plan 2023-2028 (TISP)  that aims to support the national vision of Samoa as the hub of the Pacific by providing faster,  safer, cheaper and greener transport and infrastructure services.”

According to the Minister, to date S.P.A. in collaboration with Royal HaskoningDHV and A.D.B. have commenced the implementation of 10 key initiatives.

"With projects like the Green Port Initiative," he said, "we are contributing to the global efforts to combat climate change and protect the planet by reducing our greenhouse gas emissions, carbon footprint and waste.

In introducing the Green Port Ambassadors the Minister announced the launching of rain water harvesting initiative plus multi-hazard disaster preparedness plan.

He used the opportunity to acknowledge A.D.B. for its continuous support through their financial assistance and Royal Haskoning for leading the project.

The Minister also thanked the S.P.A. Board of Directors which is chaired by Tuiloma Neroni Slade, management and staff.
