The Knight volleyball club from Vaitele-fou has once again maintained the winner's title at American Samoa's Mosooi volleyball tournament, making them undefeatable from last year.

There were 16 teams which participated in the tournament, five from Samoa and 11 from American Samoa. It was the Knight volleyball club's dream to bring back the trophy this year and they did just that.

In an interview with the Samoa Observer on Friday, the Knight's vice captain, Myer Mikaele said it was not just about winning but gaining victory and developing the sport in Samoa and showcase young talents.

"First of all we are very humbled by the victory, having to bring back the title this year as one of our main goals is to maintain our title and we did that and we are very happy," he said.

"We're speechless and just proud and excited to keep on going and knowing that this can be a motivation to most of our young players to keep up with their talents and just do better and enjoy."

The tournament was held from the 21st to the 28th of October and is held annually for volleyball clubs in both Pago Pago and Samoa to participate and compete in.

This year, three of the five clubs from Samoa were female teams with one from Savaii called the Big Island which unfortunately did not secure a title at the tournament. The other two female teams are from Upolu.

The Knight volleyball club succeeded to the finals and competed against the Laumua Tasi volleyball team from American Samoa who came second.

Meanwhile, in April this year, the Knight volleyball club also competed in the Pasefika Volleyball Challenge in New Zealand and won as well.

There are currently 12 players in the Knight volleyball team and three of them are national athletes who represent Samoa. Two of them could not make it due to injuries and seasonal work while one managed to travel with the team.

Mr. Mikaele highlighted that living the life in rural areas where there is always a volleyball exercise in the afternoons, can be an eye opening experience but he urged the young talents to come out and show themselves.

"There is a lot of talent out there but it's just sitting there in the villages in the rural area where they always have those exercises in the afternoon but they are not letting themselves be known," he said.

He added that he sees a bright future in volleyball if the young talents don't limit themselves to the village and community volleyball exercises but participate more in the professional sport with strict rules and protocols.
