Grandmother's White Sunday love for grandson

Sixty-three-year-old grandmother Tina Leu'u of Mulifanua may be having the worst White Sunday long weekend as a mother and a grandmother.

But she wouldn't have it any other way being next to her 7-year-old grandson who is admitted at the Tupua Tamasese Meaole National Hospital Moto'otua and at one time was fighting for his life.

In an interview with the Samoa Observer on Saturday, Mrs. Leu'u, a mother of eight with 20-plus grandchildren, explained that this is the first time she had to skip her White Sunday shopping and just stay at the hospital to look after her sick grandson.

"I wouldn't have spent the last three to four weeks anywhere else other than being here right next to my grandson and I thank God for his protection upon him, for he has made some improvements from the first time we just brought him to the hospital while he was fighting for his life," she said.

"And for White Sunday this year, it is every parent's and every grandparent's dream to get up early Saturday morning to make sure all the shopping for the whole week is done and if something's missing, there's always time on Saturday to buy it.

"However, I could not do that this year and it's the first time I am not rushing here and there, getting things ready for my grandchildren especially the young ones because of my grandson."

Her grandson was rushed to the hospital after weightlifting plates – that he was playing with – fell on his head and fractured his skull. Fortunately, he has made major improvements since the time he was admitted in critical condition.

Every White Sunday Mrs. Leu'u said she gets all her children and grandchildren to spend time together as a family and reminisce on how they have lived over the years with their children and work on ways to improve their parenting.

However, looking back at the mishap, that resulted in her grandson's hospitalisation, she said this is a lesson for her grandson's parents on how they should look after their children properly and supervise them at all times during their young age.

Mrs. Leu'u also spoke of the importance of parenting and White Sunday while at the same time sharing about spending the day at a hospital full of sick children who will be away from their loved ones on the day.

"I am sure I will reflect on how I spent my White Sunday with my kids last year and just having a wonderful and happy time together. Now that I will just be at the hospital this Sunday, I am sure God will provide us with the happiness we need during White Sunday, especially for my grandson.

"It's also a great lesson for this kid's parents on how they were also at fault in this incident which could've taken his life, we never know what will happen in the future and it's always good to be aware.

"May all the children of Samoa have a wonderful White Sunday, especially all the children spending White Sunday here at the hospital as well as my poor grandson, God bless you all."
