Volunteer Service Abroad marks 60 years in Samoa
Last Friday 28 July 2023 New Zealand diplomats, Volunteer Service Abroad (VSA) representatives, and program partners gathered at the New Zealand High Commissioner's residence at Vailima to celebrate a milestone – 60 years of the VSA programme in Samoa.
The event brought together people from both nations who were part of the journey of positive transformation and cross-cultural exchanges. It was also a gathering of the VSA local partners and friends as well as current and past volunteers, according to a media release issued by the VSA Samoa office on Friday
In 1963 a chapter opened when two teachers from New Zealand arrived at Salafai High School in Savai'i, Samoa. The unique aspect of their journey was that they had lived over 950km apart in New Zealand and now found themselves adjusting to life on a small island, only 70km long. This educational initiative was made possible through the VSA, New Zealand's largest international volunteer development agency, which established the programme to foster educational and cultural exchanges between the two nations.
Over the years, the VSA programme has grown significantly, touching the lives of countless students and individuals in Samoa. By 1981, the programme boasted 15 volunteer teachers working in various schools each year. The impact of these volunteers was profound, and their contributions are fondly remembered by Samoans worldwide as they reflect on their formative years of learning.
Today, five dedicated volunteers are working in Samoa, but their roles extend beyond traditional teaching. The VSA programme has expanded to encompass various fields, with volunteers actively involved in business, agriculture, health, economic sustainability and efforts to mitigate the impacts of climate change. This evolution reflects the commitment of VSA to adapt to the changing needs and priorities of Samoa. Going forward VSA Samoa will welcome 5 more volunteers who will support government ministries and civil society organisations before the end of 2023, with more volunteer applications in the pipeline.
At the 60-year celebration event last Friday, the Acting Prime Minister, Tuala Tevaga Ponifasio addressed the audience and expressed gratitude to the VSA for its commitment and changes brought about in partnership with organisations and communities in Samoa. He emphasised the mutual benefits of the programme, highlighting how the volunteers' experiences and shared memories with local communities enriched both New Zealand and Samoa.
Acknowledging the support of successive governments in both countries, as well as the collaborative efforts of local partners in Samoa, VSA recognises that its journey to 60 years has not been a solitary one. The organisation has worked hand in hand with the Samoa Government and local partners to understand the country's development needs and challenges. This collaborative approach ensures that volunteers from New Zealand are sourced to provide meaningful support in alignment with Samoa's goals and aspirations.
Operating for 60 years is no small feat, particularly in the face of changing political landscapes and unforeseen global challenges like the recent pandemic. However, VSA owes its success to the dedicated individuals who have selflessly volunteered their time, leaving behind their jobs, homes, and friends to make a positive impact in Samoa.
"As we celebrate this remarkable milestone, let us not forget the volunteers who walk the streets of Samoa, contributing their time, skills, and energy to make a difference. The simple expression of "Mālō lava" serves as a symbol of appreciation and acknowledgment for their tremendous dedication," reads the VSA media release.
"The team at the VSA Samoa office wholeheartedly gives all the glory and honour to God for His immeasurable favour upon the VSA Programme, particularly over the recent years.
"VSA wishes to express immense gratitude to the NZ High Commissioner, His Excellency Dr. Trevor Matheson and Mrs Matheson, as well as the New Zealand High Commission team for their support in bringing this momentous celebration together, and graciously hosting VSA partners, volunteers and friends at the residence."
The anniversary commemorated the collaborative work over the past 60 years and embraced the growth and expansion in the present, which are founded upon strong relationships and enduring partnerships, as well as anticipated with excitement and purpose the future of VSA in Samoa.
