College girls create app to track period

Three girls studying at Amoa College in Fa'asaleleaga have worked on a project and created a period tracker app using Visual Studio and Python Language.

With the assistance of their computer studies teacher, the students Logo Tuika, Alamein Talanivalu and Telesia Sefo were able to put the project together and present it in front of an audience during the S.I.T.A. Expo last week.

The Samoa Information Technology Association (SITA) Tech Expo 2023 was a two-day event that brought together hundreds of students from across the country.

Prime Minister, Fiame Naomi Mata'afa and her Cabinet Ministers were present at the launching of the S.I.T.A Expo where the trio from Amoa College presented their project.

According to the student presenters, the inspiration behind their project design and programming was identifying symptoms that girls experience before and during their menstrual cycle.

"The app is to keep track of girls' menstrual cycles for the convenience of knowing when they will likely start and stop. It is also to avoid embarrassment and have them prepared for when they expect their next period."

While there are a number of period tracker apps that can be found online, this particular project by the three students was dubbed a "milestone", as it was designed and put together by young girls from Savai'i.

The three girls downloaded and installed the visual studio code and then input the code using Python language before they compiled the app. The trio from Amoa College also shared that they hope the app they have designed and created will help teenage girls to predict when their next cycle is going to be.

With the rise in technology use, the students of Amoa College hope to encourage more young girls in Samoa to get into Information and Communication Technology (I.C.T.). They also want to empower women to "make a change" and that they are limitless.

The Amoa College teachers who assisted the three students with their presentation are Temukisa Samuelu,  Keli Legaoi and Hennrilynn Grey.
