S.T.A. explains use of Friendship Park
The Samoa Tourism Authority has cleared the air on concerns raised by members of the public on new charges that were announced for the use of Friendship Park in town.
The S.T.A. Acting Chief Executive Officer Tupa'i Robert Ah Sam said the Friendship Park is still open and free for members of the public for recreational purposes.
He also cleared the air on concerns raised by some concerned citizens on social media which criticised new fees which became effective from 1 July 2023. He said that the charges only apply for events and functions that could be held at Friendship Park by various organisations.
"As the responsible authority for Friendship Park, is it our role to ensure that the park is well-maintained so that it may continue to be utilised for a long period for recreational activities for the general public," said Tupa'i in an email to the Samoa Observer. "The fees and charges as approved by the National Revenue Board and Cabinet will assist the Authority with the overall maintenance and upkeep of the park.
"The fees and charges in the notice only apply for any events or functions which organisations would like to host at Friendship Park whereby they can hire the Open Lawn Amphitheatre and the Open Sports Courts. The general public is free to use the park free of charge until curfew at 10 pm."
There is also a standard process in place to monitor and supervise how the charges are applied whereby a request form for the hiring of the facility can be uplifted and filled at the S.T.A. Office.
"The funds collected from the fees and charges will assist the Authority with the maintenance and repair of the Park."
Tupa'i used the opportunity to remind the general public that the maintenance of the park and its facilities as well as keeping it clean and beautiful is a collective responsibility.
"Remember, it is our collective responsibility to make sure the Friendship Park and Samoa are kept clean and beautiful at all times. Please make sure to use our rubbish bins placed around Friendship Park for proper disposal of rubbish."
The fees and charges for the use of the park was announced in a notice signed by the C.E.O. of the Tourism Authority, Toleafoa Pativaine Tevita.
