Missing girls were mostly runaways: top cop

The trend of female teenagers being reported missing by families has emerged again as the Police did not receive any reports for the whole month of June.

Acting Police Commissioner, Leiataua Samuelu Afamasaga told the Samoa Observer in an interview Tuesday, that most of the missing girls are reported missing because of misunderstanding within their own homes.

"All these missing girls are mostly missing from their homes due to problems within their families," he said. "That usual mentality where they get offended and decide to leave home when their parents scold or say something to them.

"They're always either at their relatives' homes when they leave home but none of these cases have any links to crime. If a huge crime is involved or is linked to their missing, then we will inform the public to be aware, but that is what we confirmed from their parents when they're found so far."

On Monday this week, the Samoa Police, Prisons and Corrections Services (S.P.P.C.S.) informed the general public that another missing teenage girl, Daphne Shamilleanalei Teuils Fagalilo also known as Angel had been found.

The 13-year-old teenager was reported missing over the weekend by her family in Lelata. But she has since been found and is alive and well and reunited with her family who were appreciative of the public's help in locating her.

"We would like to thank all those who shared and supported our efforts in bringing Daphne home," the Police said in a statement.

However, on Sunday this week another mother, Valu Saroa took to social media to seek the assistance of the public in locating her daughter Agnes Jasmine whom she said had been missing for three hours. It was not clear if her daughter's missing was reported to the Police.

"My daughter Agnes Jasmine left home around 7 pm. This is the first time she has left home like this. If you have seen her please call me on 7770175," read the mother's social media post. "It has only been three hours and we cannot make a missing person report to the Police.

"To all prayer warriors, please pray for the angels to cover my Agnes and to lead her home."

Five days ago the Police also sought the public's assistance in locating Unimaria Masoe, a 16-year-old girl from the village of Lepea who also went missing. The lass was last seen by her family on Thursday 6 July 2023 and was wearing a green shirt and brown long skinny jeans on the day of her disappearance.

"Any information, no matter how small, could be crucial in locating Unimaria and bringing her back home safely to her family," a statement by the Police said.

There was also a Police appeal for another girl, 17-year-old Maureen Simona also known as Lorianna Meyer of Falelauniu Uta, whom her mother reported her missing. The young girl's mother reported to the Police that she last saw her daughter three weeks ago on 29 June 2023.

None of these teenagers was reported to be found by the police except for the 13-year-old. Before these persons were reported missing by the Police this month, the last girl reported missing was on 24 April 2023 who was later found on 2 May 2023.
