Leala asks PM Fiame to sack two ministers
The Secretary of the Human Right Protection Party (H.R.P.P.) has called on the Leader of the Government , Prime Minister Fiame Naomi Mataafa to sack two of her cabinet ministers.
Veteran parliamentarian Lealailepule Rimoni Aiafi for the constituency of Faleata No.3 alleged that two cabinet ministers have "committed a serious misconduct".
The two cabinet ministers Lealailepule is referring to are the Minister of Finance, Mulipola Anarosa Ale-Molio'o, and the Minister of Agriculture and Fisheries, La'auli Leuatea Schmidt.
The resignation call from Lealailepule was prompted after international media picked up on the issue and the alleged involvement of the two cabinet ministers with the three Hong Kong-based stock exchange companies registered in Samoa.
These companies want to set up in Samoa to deal with cryptocurrency, something which the nation has no regulatory framework for.
The issue has also been covered by this newspaper and this week, Mulipola denied signing off on any agreement with the three companies, despite photos of her being present at the launch of the three companies in April this year.
Lealailepule believes there should be an investigation into the matter.
"These two Ministers should step down while a thorough investigation should be conducted," Lealailepule told this newspaper.
This claim has been denied by Mulipola while La'auli, when posed the question by international media, refused to comment.
“I believe I have no obligation to reply to your request,” Laauli said in response to the international media. “You can report whatever you wish for the issues you requested.”
"This has great ramifications on the good name of Samoa and they even used the government crest,” Lealailepule said.
"They have put their personal needs above national interests and they've betrayed the people they vowed to serve.
"One minister in particular has been in the midst of so many alleged suspicious activities lately and it's about time the PM should demand his resignation.
"Such conduct from these ministers is unacceptable and a breach of their code of ethics.
"Laauli lately has been saying in public that he doesn't want Tuilaepa and me to enter parliament again but the Supreme Court thinks otherwise. He's the one who should be removed from cabinet and parliament immediately."
The Government has already made an official statement that they have not endorsed or given approval to the establishment of the three companies.
This position was reiterated by the Finance Minister in response to queries from this newspaper earlier this week.
