Local movie gets Vodafone's support
A movie shot in Samoa with a cast of mostly locals will be released on Valentine’s Day next year.
The movie is called The Samoa Deal and writer/director Jordon Moir said the film showcases the beauty of Samoa and its culture, and pays homage to the culture and people he has associated with for more than 30 years.
“Most of my life, I have been captivated by the beauty and colour of the Samoan people and their culture,” he said.
“They’ve had a profound effect on my life and relationships. When the opportunity to write and direct this film came to me, I jumped at the chance to take what I already knew about Samoa and present it to the world,” Mr Moir said.
Part of their vision for the movie, Turtle Shark Films opted to use as much local talent as possible. As such, all actors playing Samoan roles have been sourced from the islands, as well as artistic talent for key makeup and hair. Further, it engaged Vanu Studios, a local production company, to fill critical crew roles and only imported crew and equipment that did not exist on the island.
Producer Matthew Thorne explained that while the film’s protagonist is a palagi, the real star of the picture is the country of Samoa and its culture.
“The country and its culture as presented by the Mata’utia family is what saves Henry from a life without precious things like family and faith,” he said.
“It would have been wrong to do anything but work with these amazingly talented Samoans! Their charm and presence is imbued in the film through their artistic contributions and will be a lasting legacy and a fitting tribute to such a magnificent place and people.
“We hope that the experience, learning and mentoring this opportunity provided them is as wonderful for them as their contribution was for us.”
Now Vodafone has partnered with independent film production company Turtle Shark Films to bring their debut film The Samoa Deal to its theatrical release in Samoa. The Samoa Deal is the first feature film to be predominantly filmed in Samoa since 2016.
Vodafone Chief Executive Officer Rana Bose said naturally, Vodafone was quick to throw their support behind such a project.
“At Vodafone, we understand the importance of nurturing and promoting the arts in our communities. We recognize the tremendous value that films can bring in terms of cultural preservation, economic growth, and tourism,” he said.
“By supporting "The Samoan Deal," we aim to contribute and create opportunities for talented individuals in Samoa.
“Samoa holds a wealth of untapped potential as a filming destination, with its breathtaking landscapes, vibrant culture, and warm hospitality. We are determined to showcase these unique qualities to the world through projects like The Samoan Deal.
“This film will not only entertain and inspire audiences globally but also shine a spotlight on the beauty and talent that Samoa has to offer.”
The Samoa Deal is currently scheduled for theatrical release on Valentine’s Day 2024.
