Work continues to clean up Apia Park
Work to clean up Apia Park after the Motherland Samoa concert began immediately after the end of the music festival on Saturday night.
Close to a thousand people walked through the gates of the music festival on Saturday with rain in the evening turning the stadium's grounds into an all-muddy affair. The Samoa Sports Facilities Authority (S.S.F.A.) put out a statement on Monday morning on their social media accounts to advise of the closure of the stadium until further notice.
When Samoa Observer visited Apia Park on Monday, workers were busy cleaning up the debris and the mud with the sports facility beginning to get back some semblance of a sports stadium.
One of the workers, who did not identify himself, told this newspaper that they were shocked by what they saw in the aftermath of the concert on Saturday night and worked throughout the night until 4 am on Sunday.
“It was like a small tsunami hit the field and tore up the ground. There was so much rubbish everywhere to clean and we stayed up till the next morning [on Sunday] just cleaning out the park," said the worker.
According to the worker, they left Apia Park at around 4 am on Sunday Morning after doing the first lot of cleaning, just in time for church service and to do the umu at home.
The workers continued to clean up the stadium on Monday while also advising members of the public that the sports stadium is closed until further notice.
Apia Park was scheduled to play host to the 5th Marist St Joseph's International Rugby 7s tournament this weekend. However, the closure of the stadium by the S.S.F.A. from today will force its organisers to either use the Marist Sports Complex at Lotopa or Saint Joseph's College at Alafua.
