Samoa's Ministry of Health (M.O.H.) has issued special travel advice for travelers entering the country from American Samoa, amid rising concerns about the emergence of different infectious diseases.
The Ministry, in the special travel advice which was issued after 11 am on Thursday, said the ongoing emergence of different infectious diseases has compelled local authorities to emphasise the need for vigilance at Samoa's international borders. It lists the infectious diseases measles, COVID-19, monkeypox, and dengue.
"The Ministry of Health strongly advises that all travelers to Samoa to ensure required vaccinations are up to date, especially for children below 5 years of age. Travelers are not required to show proof of vaccination."
"Upon their arrival in Samoa, the passengers are also strongly advised to wear face masks at all times and take precautionary and preventative measures within the first seven days of arrival," reads the M.O.H. special travel advice.
"If you are experiencing any signs and symptoms such as fever, dry cough, redness or swelling in eyes or eyelids or watery eyes; sensitivity to light; runny nose, sneezing, a reddish-brown rash that starts from the head and spreads throughout the whole body; feeling of tiredness and body aches, and loss of appetite, please seek medical attention immediately."
American Samoa passengers with the above-mentioned symptoms have also been asked to submit to a nasal pharyngeal swab for PCR testing upon request by Samoan health officials at the Faleolo International Airport.
"Inform the healthcare worker (doctor, nurse, etc.) of your recent travel history if you fell ill while in Samoa," added the notice. "The Ministry of Health appreciates your full cooperation and patience as we work together in preventing the spread of and minimizing the impact of infectious diseases in Samoa. We pray for your safe travel to Samoa."
The notice issued on Thursday was signed by the Acting Director General of Health, Dr. Atoa Glen Fatupauito.
