Boxing Federation gets land after 10-year wait
The Samoa Boxing Federation (S.B.F.) has received a piece of land in Tuanaimato which will host the federation's headquarters for the next two decades.
The S.B.F. has been in search of land to build its headquarters on since 2013. But the 10-year wait is now over after the Samoa Association of Sports and National Olympic Community (SASNOC) agreed to lease a portion of its land to the federation.
Originally, the lease was for 3–5 years but after negotiations with the SASNOC, both parties settled on a 20-year lease. The federation has begun clearing the land, however, its further development will be put on hold due to financial constraints.
In an interview with the Samoa Observer, S.B.F. Treasurer Oialatea Faletolu Sua said the federation recently extended their current gym for their fighters to camp in as part of their preparation for upcoming competitions.
“The focus now is on the Oceania tournament coming up so we have to cater to our athletes first and it’s a financial issue right now," Oialatea said. "Even though we have insufficient funds we try our best with what we have and make do with what we can.”
The federation's current location is in Vaitele within Vicky’s motel compound with their gym the home of Samoa’s aspiring boxers and future representatives on the world stage.
The S.B.F. Vice President Fulu Maselina Nauer, who is in charge of the camp for juniors and the youth, told this newspaper of their preparations for the upcoming Oceania tournament.
“These young fighters will be representing Samoa in the upcoming Oceania games which will be hosted in Samoa on the 22nd of May. This is our seventh week camping for the games since March," she said.
“There are a lot of prospects who we believe will get medals. We do the best that we can, not only to train them but to maintain and develop their mentality, as well as their physical health."
The juniors' camp initially started with 30 children and as it progressed they were left with only 22 who were able to keep up with the training schedule demands.
Like any other sporting camp, the athletes train every day and rest to recover from fatigue and exhaustion. The S.B.F. cover their food, accommodation, school fees, and transportation during their time in camp – in order to create a suitable environment for the budding boxers' talents to grow.
