Evacuation uncovers more sexual abuse cases

The evacuation of another woman and her children from an abusive husband has led the Police to the discovery of multiple sexual abuse cases within the same family.

On Good Friday last week, another woman and a mother of three children was assaulted by her husband, with a neighbour calling the non-profit organisation's toll-free number which led to their evacuation to safety.

The SVSG worked with the Police Taskforce to evacuate the battered mother and her children to the organisation's Sakura House, which is a domestic violence shelter for women and their children.

The assault and the evacuation of the mother and her children were confirmed by the SVSG in a statement.

"The mother was physically abused by her husband all night and she sustained injuries to her face. She could not take care of herself, let alone her children," reads the SVSG statement.

According to the non-profit organisation, the children were aged 5 months, 7 years, and 8 years of age and looked tired and hungry when they were picked up

"There was an eerie look of sadness behind their eyes when the SVSG Response Team received them at the Sakura House."

The violence perpetrated against the mother also led to the Police discovering during their investigation of her 8-year-old daughter's abuse by her stepfather with her 7-year-old son being the main witness.

"It was during the Police’s interview of the mother, that the 8-year-old daughter’s sexual abuse by the stepfather was revealed, with the 7-year-old son being the main witness.

"The witness became a victim of emotional abuse himself. According to the abused mother, she was aware of her older children’s sexual and emotional abuse by her husband, but she was afraid to speak out for fear of further abuse."

Further questioning by the Police also led to the uncovering of the abuse of another 10-year-old granddaughter by the woman's father-in-law. The 10-year-old girl is a niece of the woman's husband.

The SVSG President Siliniu Lina Chang said they were appalled at the discovery of more sexual abuse cases within the same family which targeted the children.

“As a child protection agency, we are appalled by the animal instincts of adults who prey on their own children, even on a day as significant as Good Friday," Siliniu said.

“With ongoing awareness programs and community intervention to engage our people to be part of the solution, the intergenerational cycle of violence takes time to be uprooted and stamped out from our families.

"And we will not back down as we continue to advocate and raise awareness on eliminating gender-based violence."

Commending Police Commissioner Auapaau Logoitino Filipo for the partnership between SVSG and the Police, Siliniu said they will continue to be the voice of the voiceless, especially the most vulnerable women and children.
