Second cyclone of the year looms

The second tropical cyclone of the new year could form within days according to New Zealand’s MetService however forecasters are hoping that the system breaks down before it can.

It was just last week when Cyclone Hale was named and the system wreaked havoc with heavy rain on New Zealand.

The system was expected to move eastward, across, or close to southern Vanuatu late next week and then move closer to New Caledonia and if does form into a cyclone, its predicted path would see moving towards New Zealand.

Samoa is not any direct threat from this system however it will bring about rain.

According to Samoa Meteorology Services, there is a convergence zone lying in the vicinity of Samoa which will bring heavy rain and nation will look forward to another week of rain.

The weather office has issued a heavy rain advisory.

“The convergence zone now lies within the vicinity of Samoa as confirmed by the weather map this morning. Breezy and moist conditions were observed in most parts of the country due to this system,” said the Samoa Meteorological Services in its bulletin.

“Scattered rain with brief heavy falls, gusty periods and a few thunderstorms is the weather we expect for today (Sunday) through tomorrow (Monday). Therefore, the highlighted advisory remains in effect for all land areas of Samoa.”

The weather office expects heavy downpours with poor visibility, foggy and slippery roads over mountain passes and ranges, pooling near roadsides and waterways.

Meanwhile according to the New Zealand MetService, the cyclone could possibly form by Wednesday.

“We’re not looking at this to start to form until around Wednesday, and if it heads down towards us, that’s still a long way off,” MetService meteorologist John Law told the New Zealand Herald.

The area of risk at this point was limited to around Vanuatu, with conditions in the Coral Sea expected to be favourable for forming cyclones over the week.

“It’s a situation that we’re obviously going to be keeping a very close eye on, but at the moment, it looks like it’s going to be very far away.”

Hale’s visit last week was estimated to have caused millions of dollars in damage in Coromandel, while leaving beaches and waterways around the Tairawhiti region strewn with slash and debris.

For now, a ridge of high pressure sitting over the country was forecast to bring more hot, settled weather tomorrow, with 30C highs on the cards for Wanaka and Alexandra, Laws said.

By mid-week, MetService was forecasting isolated showers about both islands – and possibly more heavy rain for Gisborne.

“There is an area of low pressure that swings down toward northern and eastern parts of the country as we head toward the end of the week, which could potentially bring some wetter weather in places like the Coromandel, that have already seen a fair bit of it.”

“In the short-term, that’s our main concern.”
