Samoa's Beijing-based diplomat has acknowledged China's efforts to share data with the World Health Organisation amid rising Covid-19 cases in the Asian nation.

Ambassador Luamanuvae Albert Mariner was one of over 130 foreign diplomats in Beijing who were briefed recently on China's latest Covid policy, according to a report by State-run English language television channel CGTN.

CGTN reported that the Chinese Government is optimising its Covid policy "in a proactive way and based on scientific research".

Speaking to the television channel, Luamanuvae acknowledged the efforts of China to share data with global organisations such as the World Health Organisation.

"One of the key information that I noted is China's ongoing efforts to ensure that the country shares the data with the WHO," said the Samoan diplomat.

"They had a recent communication with WHO to share data with the health of the vaccine, how the COVID is mutating.

"This problem with COVID is a global problem and it requires a global solution and the only way to find a global solution is through collaboration and dialogue."

Aldo Alvarez, El Salvador's Ambassador to China who was also interviewed by CGTN, expressed confidence that China's economy is on the rebound after being briefed on Beijing's Covid policy.

"More inbound travelers coming to China to seek business opportunities and more Chinese entrepreneurs and business people are seeking out business abroad," Mr. Alvarez said.

"That will have an impact on the economy. That will make the economy more dynamic in a short period of time. I have no doubt about it.

"And that will benefit, in general, the economy, the real economy, and the people's economy."

The Chinese Government's recent brief for foreign diplomats living comes amid increasing calls for Beijing to share more comprehensive data on the Covid-19 outbreak.

Authorities in China have been accused of distributing information that did not truly reflect the situation on the ground, leading to a number of governments around the world issuing coronavirus testing requirements for travelers from China.

According to the WHO Covid-19 Dashboard, China as of 6pm Monday 9 January 2023 (Samoa local time) recorded 34,610 new coronavirus cases in the last 24 hours.
