Drink Drunk Drive Dead billboard is up

The simple message of drinking alcohol and not driving could not get any bigger than this as a billboard has been erected by the Salvation Army and the Samoa Police Service in Apia to remind people.

Since 2018, the Salvation Army Addiction Services have provided treatment for those who need help with their alcohol and/or drug addiction. Many are referred from the Ministry of Justice and 51 per cent are for those who are charged with driving under the influence of alcohol.

Aukusitino Senio is one of the team leaders for Addiction Services in Samoa under the Salvation Army. He said it was always a concern for them when it's approaching this time of the year when a lot of celebrations are occurring that involve alcohol.

"The main focus of this campaign is to save lives if we could help someone make a wise decision and not drive under the influence of alcohol then we can say that the message has got through," he said.

"This message is not only for those who are engaging in this dangerous and deadly behavior, but also for friends and family who know of people who continuously put themselves and others at risk of harm from driving under the influence of alcohol.

"It seems that our people tend to have a casual attitude towards this behavior and it needs to stop. The consequences can be extremely devastating to the individual, victims, families and the many others who are impacted.

"There is no replay when you smash head on with another car because your brain is impaired, and you cannot think straight."

They advise the public to plan ahead when having a few drinks is going to be a part of the celebration. According to the Salvation Army, the responsibility lies with everyone to look out for one another's safety and not drive and drink alcohol.  They said it is not a competition, there will never be a winner, only misery, devastation and regret.

"Be a Hero this Christmas and say no to drink driving, be a champion for your children, family, friends village and save a life by being a good role model," Mr. Senio said.

The Salvation Army acknowledges their partnership with the Samoa Police Traffic Unit and the generous sponsorship of Agnes and Chene Uhrle of Uhrle Auto Repairs and Towing, Go Advertising, SSAB Chief Executive Officer Tofilau Fiti Leung Wai, General Manager, Daisy Inia and Trish, Ben and team who made this project possible.
