Samoans get ready as the boxers from the Pacific will square off against each other on a night where two of the nation's best amateur fighters take a leap into the professional arena.

Marist Brothers Old People Association launched the boxing tournament officially on Tuesday and announced that the fight night is scheduled for next Friday evening.

Samoa's very own Ato Plodzicki-Faoagali and Marion Ah Tong will be debuting on the night with their first professional fight against seasoned boxing pro-fighters.

Ato was a silver medallist at the Commonwealth Games in Birmingham, England from July to August this year when he fought in the under 92-kg category.

Bishop Leauanae Tuugatiti, the Chairman of the Marist boxing said the tournament will also used to prepare local boxers for the Pacific Games in the Solomon Islands next year.

"This boxing event will also be a platform for the youth to gain more experience and develop their fighting skills with other fighters from across the region," he said.

"There will be over 50 fighters flying into Apia to participate in this event and most of them may even come with their families and friends for support."

Ato and Marion were set to have their debuts in Australia, however, the committee altered the plans and decided to have it in Samoa to coincide with the country's 60th Independence anniversary celebrations.

The Marist Sports Club said they were thankful to the Government of Samoa and the business community for their continuous support the event could not have been made possible without their generosity. The sports club is looking to invest in the future of the athletes presenting them with opportunities for a better life.
