S.S.A.B. "shift gears" to navigate the pandemic
Samoa Stationery and Books Ltd (S.S.A.B.) opened a larger branch in Vaitele on Friday with the C.E.O. of the local company saying they had to "shift gears" as the Covid pandemic took its toll on the local economy.
S.S.A.B. Chief Executive Officer, Tofilau Fiti Leung Wai, told the Samoa Observer on Friday that she had faith in God over the past two and a half years with the country in lockdown and the Covid-19 pandemic taking its toll on the local economy.
Asked how the company was able to navigate the challenges of the pandemic, she said in order to minimise its impact, they had to diversify their business portfolio to generate new revenue streams.
"My faith in God was key and I trusted in his direction in managing S.S.A.B. the past two and a half years. S.S.A.B. had to shift gears especially when the effects of the pandemic were starting to take a toll on the global and local economy," said Tofilau.
"I had to look at new opportunities where we could sustain our income and generate new revenue such as selling school uniforms, setting up our embroidery and screen printing services as well as expanding our safety gear and apparel ranges.
"Our successful navigation through the pandemic is a testament of God's favour and faithfulness to our company and we are deeply grateful.
"We have not rested in all facets of our work especially with the managing and the operational side of things."
It was during the pandemic that the company established a new department, which Tofilau said placed a special emphasis on recruiting seamstresses who were laid off from their previous jobs or unable to sell their dresses at the flea market.
"In addition, during the pandemic S.S.A.B. set up a whole new department, particularly for the seamstresses to employ women, that were unfortunately let go from their previous jobs and when the flea market was not at a profitable level," she added.
"It's always my heart to help our people like the women that needed jobs and the money to raise their kids and look after their family."
When asked if the company had future expansion plans after opening their Vaitele branch, Tofilau said they remain thankful for the opening of their bigger branch and like other companies they also have future plans.
"We praise God for his favour which has enabled S.S.A.B. to open its Super Store during these tough times.
"Like any other company we also have our future plans, however we trust in God and look forward to any opportunities he has in store for S.S.A.B.
"As for now, we will continue to do our work in delivering the best service and offering the best products for the people of Samoa."
The new S.S.A.B. Super Store opened its doors to customers on Friday morning and is stocked with furniture, homeware, whiteware, electronics as well as books and clothing for customers in Vaitele.
The company has closed its shop directly opposite Samoa Breweries Ltd (Vailima) and took over and refurbished what used to be the main shop of Big Bear Samoa, giving it a total makeover.
