Remember Lot’s wife.
When you ask people about their favourite hero in the Bible, they will usually say King David, Joseph, or another obedient hero. David was an adulterer, a murderer among many things. He was also a man after God’s own heart when he followed the instructions. Many unnamed heroes were good, helped the cause, and villains who did the most vile and evil things.
Delilah, Jezebel, and the woman at the well were not honourable women. Pharaoh’s wife wanted Joseph to do her bidding, Delilah led Samson to death, and Jezebel, well many have fallen to the pits of hell for her. Whoever said the Bible is not worth reading needs to reconsider. Even if you are not a Christian, historical events and characters will interest you. If you are a history buff, you’ll enjoy it.
Remember Lot’s wife. Lot and his family were told to leave their home and never look back. Like a child who is told not to do something that isn’t good, she just couldn’t help herself. This is a normal reaction for many of us when we leave our homes or loved ones while pursuing greater things. It’s also normal for many of us to look at the past, at the good times, and want to relive those. We will always look back.
What does this woman teach us? What is the lesson? Obey the voice of God in our lives. Take your family and leave a place. Remove yourself from situations that aren’t good for you and your family. Don’t look back at what you're leaving and what’s burning. Don’t look back at what God’s delivering you from. Remember Lot’s wife who turned into a pillar of salt. There is nothing in that hurtful past that can be changed. Even the good cannot be relived. The only thing we can do is leave it there.
Move forward with anticipation, at what is new and the blessings coming our way. Look at the now and what we can manage. Look within ourselves at what we can improve and in our own homes. Look at our reality and how we can help ourselves. Stop looking around and outside, we have no control over any of that.
When you understand the true value of eternity, you spend more time searching and longing for it. Even though we live in this world, we’ll understand that we are just passing through. Once that sinks in, we will have a different view of the world and all its fleeting things. While we enjoy another relaxing Sunday in Samoa, remember Lot’s wife. We can learn a lot from her.
