Prime Minister Laaaulialemalietoa Leuatea Schmidt’s behaviour at the recent press conference with the visiting Australian Foreign Minister, Senator Hon. Penny Wong, was a national disgrace!

His heavy-handed reaction to the media is well known locally.

However, on Wednesday, it was on full display for the international audience to witness for themselves.

Our guests were obviously uncomfortable and embarrassed.

Never has a Prime Minister of Samoa instructed the police to physically remove a journalist from a press conference in the presence of visiting dignitaries.

The leader of our nation should never lose his composure and sense of dignity when confronted by the voice of the people.

There are many ways to handle tough and uncomfortable questions without being physically aggressive.

Laauli owes the Australian Foreign Minister and her delegation an apology for his undiplomatic behaviour.

They will leave Samoa, hopefully with memories from a better time.

May they also spare a thought and a prayer for our sad new reality.
