Blind allegiance and divisive rhetoric
Dear Editor,
It is deeply concerning to see a growing number of so-called "Christians" who, under the banner of religious devotion, lash out at anyone who opposes Laauli and his slow-motion fraction of the FAST party.
What is particularly shocking is that some of these individuals, who have achieved so much in society, fall victim to Laauli’s dangerous rhetoric and divisive tactics, parroting his every word as though it were gospel truth. I am left wondering, how can educated, accomplished people so blindly follow a man whose actions and words are far from the values that true Christians should embody?
What is even more troubling is the utter disregard many of these supporters show for the mounting evidence of corruption and manipulation unfolding before their eyes. How can such educated people be so easily deceived by someone whose promises remain unfulfilled and whose words are laced with lies? It’s as if their minds have been shut off to critical thinking. Are they so blinded by political loyalty or ambition that they cannot see the truth?
The most outrageous aspect, however, is the vile language and personal attacks directed at anyone who dares to challenge Laauli. Those who voice concerns are ruthlessly silenced and branded as traitors, or worse. It is disheartening to witness Christians, who should be preaching love, understanding, and respect engage in such hate-filled attacks on their fellow citizens. As Mark Twain once said, "It is easier to fool people than to convince them that they have been fooled." How can these individuals claim to follow Christ, yet treat others with such contempt?
Let’s not forget the damaging accusations made by individuals like Faleata 4 MP Ale Vena against the Prime Minister. These baseless attacks are an assault on the very office of the Prime Minister of Samoa. By undermining the credibility of the leader of our nation, Vena and others who engage in such behaviour are doing irreparable harm to the democratic processes that hold our country together.
It’s further compounded by the voices of unqualified individuals, such as Asiata and his like-minded companions, who spread confusion on social media with nothing of value to offer. These voices lack the critical insight necessary to engage in meaningful discussions about Samoa’s future. But what else can you expect from the majority of Laauli's supporters? A glance at their Facebook pages reveals many work in low-paying jobs overseas, which may explain why it’s so difficult to shake some sense into their heads.
As Samoans, we deserve better.
