Saluting the whistleblowers who define the Samoan spirit

By The Editorial Board 31 December 2024, 7:55AM

As another year comes to a close, the Samoa Observer continues its tradition of honouring individuals whose contributions have profoundly shaped our society. This year, amidst scandals and controversies, our editorial board has chosen to recognise those whose courage illuminates the darkness: whistleblowers.

In naming whistleblowers as our 2024 Person of the Year, we salute those brave individuals who have risked their personal welfare to expose wrongdoing for the betterment of Samoa. Their actions exemplify the highest ideals of citizenship—putting the welfare of the nation above their own.

The courage of whistleblowers has been a defining feature of our reporting this year. The volume of confidential information provided to the Samoa Observer has been extraordinary, not only in its depth but in its cause: a commitment to integrity and justice. In a country where public officials often operate behind veils of secrecy and evade scrutiny, whistleblowers stand as a testament to the enduring strength of the Samoan spirit.

Their bravery comes at great personal cost. Samoa lacks protections for whistleblowers—a promise made but yet to be fulfilled. Yet, despite the absence of safeguards, these individuals have found the courage to speak out, reminding us all that standing on the sidelines in the face of wrongdoing only serves to empower injustice.

The Samoa Observer has long been committed to amplifying these voices. For nearly 50 years, we have held steadfast to our mission: to shine a light on decisions and deliberations that shape the lives of Samoans. We do this regardless of political pressure and influences, knowing the importance of serving the public's right to know. Information is scarce, and public officials often resist accountability. However, our promise remains firm—we do not reveal our sources.

This principle was famously affirmed by the late Sir Harold Evans, the legendary editor of The Times, who once said, “Every time a journalist is harassed to reveal their source, they should think of the ordeals of Samoa’s Savea Sano Malifa, who would never yield.” These words continue to inspire our commitment to safeguarding those who entrust us with the truth, no matter the pressure or the stakes.

In honouring whistleblowers, we also honour the public, who hold the key to Samoa’s future. Through whistleblowers, the people are activated, informed, and empowered. It is this connection between informed citizens and courageous sources that keeps our democracy alive.

While whistleblowers are this year’s Person of the Year, we also acknowledge others who were featured in this special edition for their contributions to Samoa’s progress. Their stories of service and resilience remind us of the incredible potential within our nation and the many ways individuals can uplift their communities.

As we look forward to 2025, let this recognition be a powerful reminder that hope persists. Deep within our communities, there are individuals who still believe in doing what is right—not for themselves but for the nation. To those who have blown the whistle, Samoa owes you a debt of gratitude. Your actions inspire us all to stand firm in the face of wrongdoing and to never yield in our pursuit of justice.

From all of us at the Samoa Observer, thank you. To our readers, sources, and whistleblowers: Happy New Year, and may we all continue to strive for a Samoa that values truth, courage, and the collective good.
