Samoan students get Japan experience under exchange program
The JENESYS (Japan-East Asia Network of Exchange for Students and Youths) program, a fully funded cultural exchange initiative sponsored by the Government of Japan, continues to inspire students from the University of the South Pacific (USP).
Through unique study tours, participants gain firsthand insights into Japanese culture, innovation, and sustainability while sharing the vibrant traditions of the Pacific Islands.
Next year, several USP Samoan students will embark on this transformative journey, each driven by a shared excitement to learn and exchange cultural values. Tauva Laulii Lefauaitu, a fourth-year Bachelor of Law student who is participating in the Peace Building theme expressed her aspirations for the trip: “I want to explore Japan and learn about their culture while also promoting my home, Samoa. Peacebuilding, the theme of my program, ties closely with my legal studies as it focuses on justice and harmony.”
Katalina Ella Pelenato Liufau, studying Marine Science, emphasized her interest in environmental preservation: “Japan’s approach to marine resource management aligns with my passion for ocean conservation. I hope to learn practices that can benefit Samoa.” Similarly, Trinity Gabriel Papaata, a double major in Biology and Chemistry, shared: “I look forward to learning about environmental sustainability and disaster prevention. Understanding Japan’s resilience to disasters could inspire solutions for challenges in Samoa.”
Past participants, such as Mariyon Janet Namotai Mah Yuen, highlight the program’s impact. Mariyon, who visited Hiroshima as part of the Peace Building theme in January 2024, reflecting: “Hiroshima’s revival and embrace of peace were profoundly moving. It taught me the strength of resilience and forgiveness, qualities we can all aspire to embody.” Her experiences ranged from exploring cultural landmarks to daily life with a host family, which provided a deeper connection to Japanese traditions and innovation.
USP students aged 18 to 34 are encouraged to apply for JENESYS, a chance not only to explore Japan but to represent the Pacific on a global stage. Applications are coordinated through the USP International Office, and participants return enriched by experiences that shape their academic and personal growth. "I deeply hope to see more Samoan students embrace the opportunity to join JENESYS. It’s an extraordinary journey that touches your soul, offering unforgettable experiences and the chance to forge lasting friendships along the way." (Mariyon Mah Yuen)
