Chanel College’s top student for 2024 Joannariah Tiatia’s achievement was a result of her consistency and dedication.

The 16-year-old student stood proudly before her peers, teachers, and family, delivering a heartfelt speech reflecting on the challenges and triumphs she and her classmates had faced throughout their high school journey.

Joannariah expressed deep gratitude to her parents, describing them as her strongest supporters.

“They were my number one supporters, advising me throughout the year to do my best,” she said.

She also acknowledged the unwavering support of her teachers and her close group of friends, whom she fondly referred to as her “top six,” for their moral support and healthy competition.

Joannariah followed the Commerce pathway and shared her ambition to pursue further studies in the same field.

Her academic excellence was reflected in the numerous awards she received, including the Chamber of Commerce Top Commerce Student, Top Academic in Accounting and Economics, and second place in English, Mathematics, and Computer Studies.

Chanel College principal Unasa Tepora praised Joannariah for her consistency and dedication noting that she had been the top overall academic student from Year 9 to Year 12.

“Joannariah is industrious but also caring, often assisting her peers with their studies. She does not leave others behind,” Unasa said, expressing confidence in her future success.

Reflecting on her journey, Joannariah admitted that it had not been easy, especially during her senior year.

“This year was particularly challenging with many new students joining us, including those from abroad. Competition was tough, but I thank God and my parents for helping me overcome these hardships,” she said.

Joannariah credited her success to discipline, perseverance, and the structured support system at home.

She explained how her mother ensured balance by creating a roster allowing her to manage household chores and study time effectively.

“Some nights I stayed up all night studying for exams, but I pushed myself over the limit because I believe we are capable of much more than we think,” she added.

She also highlighted the role of her teachers in shaping her academic journey.

She spoke warmly of her class teacher, Ms Tavu’i, who fostered a collaborative environment among students, and her English teacher, Mrs Alesana, whom she described as a second mother.

“Mrs Alesana inspired me and encouraged me to believe I am more than my competitors,” Joannariah said.

When asked about her favourite subjects, Joannariah expressed a passion for business studies, which led her to choose the Commerce pathway.

She shared her love for Accounting, Economics and English, which had been her favourite subject since Year 8.

Becoming Valedictorian was a dream that Joannariah nurtured since she first started at Chanel College in Year 9.

“It is an honour and an achievement I have worked toward since Year 9. I hope this recognition brings more attention to our school and inspires others,” she said.

Her mother expressed pride and joy in Joannariah’s accomplishments.

“Praying for her and supporting her in everything was key. Seeing her achieve this makes me the proudest mother,” she shared.

Joannariah offered advice to future Valedictorians encouraging them to remain focused and determined.

“Never lose focus on your studies. Approach every opportunity with excitement and you will achieve great results,” she said.

As Joannariah embarks on the next chapter of her journey, Chanel College and her family remain confident that she will continue to excel and bring pride to everyone who has supported her.
