Young writer thrilled to win photo contest
I am thrilled to share that I won the Pacific Way category in the Photography Competition Exhibition at the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM) 2024, held at the People’s Forum at Tanoa Tusitala Hotel on 21 and 22 October.
Participating in this event was an amazing experience. Being a young person, learning about real-life challenges and stories is essential for us. It prepares us to handle the future better. Competing in this exhibition was also intense because every photo was inspiring and told a unique story.
The photograph that won, titled "Sali le Popo" or "Grating the Coconut", symbolizes the hopes and dreams of young Samoans. It captures the hard work, tradition, and transformation we all go through. This process is a core part of Samoan life, representing the effort and determination it takes to reach our dreams. Just as a coconut is grated and turned into something valuable, young people in Samoa work hard to turn their dreams into something meaningful.
The symbolism of the coconut goes even further. In Samoan culture, coconut products are shared within the community. So, "Sali le Popo" reflects the idea that our success is not just for ourselves but also for the upliftment of our families and communities.
Receiving this award was unexpected, but it means so much. I dedicate this work to my dad, who isn’t here physically, and to my family, friends, and especially God, who has been the core anchor of this journey. This achievement fills me with gratitude and motivates me to keep going, inspired by the love and support of those around me.
Thank you to everyone who supported me. Let this win remind us young ones: work hard, stay connected to your roots, and never lose sight of your dreams.
