Five new Toyota Landcruiser four-wheel drive vehicles were handed to the Samoa Water Authority by the Government of Japan on Wednesday.

The vehicles were funded under the Grass-Roots Human Security project.

According to the Embassy of Japan, this symbolises the continued partnership between Samoa and Japan’s work to enhance SWA’s operational capacity to deliver safe and reliable water services to Samoa.

As SWA prepares to play a critical role in ensuring reliable water supply for the upcoming Commonwealth Head of Government Meeting (CHOGM), upgrading its fleet is essential to maintaining a high standard of service delivery.

The vehicles are more than just transport but an investment to ensure clean and safe water for all of Samoa.

The Minister of Works Transport and Infrastructure, Olo Fiti Vaai said the donation will enable SWA teams to efficiently carry out essential, operational and maintenance tasks.

Olo extended their deepest gratitude to the people of Japan.

“These vehicles will enhance our capacity to deliver on our mission of providing safe and reliable water services to our communities,” said the Minister.

The Ambassador of Japan to Samoa Senta Keisuke said the vehicles made possible under the Grass Root Human Security project (CCP) will help strengthen SWA’s ability to efficiently deliver water services to communities across Samoa including remote areas.

The vehicles, valued at up to US$201,288 (approximately SAT$587,000) are part of a broader effort by the Government of Japan to improve the efficiency, reliability and overall performance of water management across Samoa, including urban, rural and Savai’i.

“Japan is confident that the new assets will help enhance the efficiency and effectiveness of water services so that the Samoa people have access to clean and safe water,” said Mr Keisuke.

“Japan will remain committed to supporting the developing goals of Samoa and give a hand to help with you to build a brighter and more sustainable future for all.”

Japan’s GGP programme embodies Japan’s commitment to fostering human security and addressing the symbol of cooperation between Japan and Samoa, working together in addressing the critical water management challenges facing Samoa and improving the quality of life for all Samoans.
