Holidays in the Island

It was Christmas Eve, and as the warm sun dipped below the horizon, I found myself on the vibrant island of Savaii. The air was thick with the scent of tropical flowers, and the azure sky painted a picturesque backdrop for the adventures that awaited me in my village of Iva.

As I arrived on Sunday, the 24th of December 2023, my first stop was a familiar and cherished place - the village pool. Surrounded by lush greenery, the pool beckoned with its clear, inviting waters. I couldn't resist the temptation to immerse myself, washing away the fatigue of the journey and setting the tone for the holiday spirit that enveloped the island.

Returning home, I embarked on a more reflective journey. I visited my father's graveyard, a place of solace and remembrance. The air was filled with a mix of emotions as I paid my respects, cherishing the memories of times shared and lessons learned. It was a poignant prelude to the festive season.

With the sun setting on Christmas Eve, I joined the community in preparing for the evening's celebration at the village church. The air resonated with hymns and the joyful voices of families coming together to mark the birth of Christ. The spirit of unity and love permeated the night, creating a profound sense of connection among the villagers.

Christmas morning dawned with a sense of excitement and purpose. Together with my family, we dedicated our time to cleaning our land on the other side of the village. The island's beauty unfolded before us, a tapestry of vibrant colors and exotic flora. It was a labor of love, a shared commitment to maintain and honor the natural blessings of our ancestral home.

The highlight of the day was a visit to the Afu Aau Waterfalls in Palauli. Nestled amidst the verdant landscape, the waterfalls cascaded with a mesmerizing grace, inviting us to indulge in the refreshing embrace of its crystal-clear pools. The ethereal beauty of the surroundings left an indelible mark on our hearts, a memory to cherish and carry with us.

Returning home, we prepared for a grand Christmas dinner at Amoa Resort. The air was filled with the enticing aroma of delicious foods and drinks, a feast fit for the occasion. Amidst laughter and shared stories, we celebrated not only Christmas but also our Grandma's birthday. The night culminated in a family photoshoot, capturing the warmth and joy that emanated from our collective bond.

As the echoes of Christmas faded, we transitioned to a more solemn occasion – the unveiling of my uncle Faleniu, who had passed away a few years ago. It was a time of reflection and commemoration, a tradition that underscored the importance of honoring our loved ones and the legacy they left behind.

Post-Christmas, I returned to Apia to welcome the New Year. The night was marked by a church service, a solemn yet hopeful way to usher in the possibilities of the coming year. The midnight sky lit up with the brilliance of fireworks, a cacophony of colors and sounds that mirrored the excitement and optimism of the gathered congregation.

New Year's Day saw us at Salamumu Beach, where the azure waters stretched endlessly before us. The beauty of the sea was mirrored by the vibrant marine life, a testament to the untouched splendor of Samoa. It was a day of relaxation and appreciation for the natural wonders that surrounded us.

Amidst the joy and beauty of the holiday season, there was a bittersweet note as we bid farewell to relatives from overseas who had shared the festivities with us. The laughter, the stories, and the bonds formed over the holidays created memories that would endure, bridging the physical distance that separated us.

In the heart of Samoa, my Christmas and New Year celebrations were a tapestry woven with the threads of tradition, family, and the awe-inspiring beauty of the islands. As I departed, the memories lingered, a testament to the magic of the season and the warmth of the Samoan hospitality that had made my holidays truly special.
