Fagalii crowned volleyball champs
The Fagalii volleyball club (FVC) came out on top of the men's division in Volleyball Samoa Federation Incorporated's (VSFI) annual beach volley competition on a hot and sunny Apia Saturday.
The FVC defeated I'a Sa men's team with an overwhelming victory of two sets to zero becoming the 2022 beach volley champions.
In the women's division, Tausala women's team secured first place against I'a Sa team two, winning two sets to nil and were crowned champions for this year. A total of 12 teams participated in the men's division and four teams in the women's division.
The President of VSFI, Leute Faamanu Mataipule was excited at the prospect of the talents on display during the two-day competition which started on Friday.
"This competition is to also prepare a team for the Pacific Games in Solomon Islands next year. This competition also looks to develop beach volleyball amongst the younger generation who may become future athletes," he said.
Over the years, their biggest obstacle for the sport was getting an ideal venue. The newly opened Friendship Park has provided the sport a much needed venue to host the competition.
The Association is hoping that this would become the true home of beach volleyball in Samoa.
"We want to thank the government of Samoa and the Samoa Tourism Authority for allowing us to use this facility. Hopefully this will be the start of a partnership with the Samoa Tourism Authority in developing this sport amongst our people," Leute said.
