Ivilasi Films, in partnership with The Ministry of Education, Sports and Culture and the National University of Samoa, is proud to present the stage adaptation of Sia Figiel’s where ‘we’ once belonged, at the historic Museum of Samoa.
The inaugural season will run from September 24th – 29th, featuring a cast of local actors, and directed by Fiona Collins.
Where ‘we’ once belonged is the award winning novel by Samoa’s first novelist, Sia Figiel, of Matautu-Tai. Published in 1996, the book won literary awards and recognition world-wide, and has been translated into several European languages. Figiel completed the stageplay in June of this year, specifically for this season and the Samoan audience.
The story is set in 1980s Samoa, in the fictitious village of Malaefou and revolves around young Alofa Filiga, and her family and friends, in an unforgettable coming-of-age story that only someone as intimately connected to Samoa as Sia Fiegel could pen.
Bringing the people of Malaefou to life, and to the Samoan stage, is veteran actor, writer and director Fiona Collins. Collins, of Vailele and Malie, is a graduate of Toi Whakaari: New Zealand Drama School and teaches performing arts at the National University of Samoa. She has assembled a crack local cast to fill out Figiel’s colorful characters that includes a cadre of young actors in training as well as O Le Tulafale cast members Ioata Tanielu and Shanti WongSin – Tausisi.
where ‘we’ once belonged represents the dynamic fusion of Samoa literature with contemporary theater, bringing together some of Samoa’s most prolific voices, and ushering in a storytelling revolution not to be missed.
