Awards

1994: PINA Press Freedom and Free Flow on Information Award
Awarded in Apia, 1994.

In 1996 when PINA was planning to hold its annual convention in Tonga, the Tongan government banned New Zealand journalist Michael Field from attending.
The reason was that Mr Field had written stories critical of the Tongan government. In protest, the Observer asked PINA to relocate its convention if the Tongan government would not lift its ban on Mr Field.
PINA did not, so the Observer boycotted the convention and returned the award to PINA. That is why there is no image of it in the box on the left.
