Working for a newspaper doesn’t just involve reporters and camera people.

There are many skills required ranging from Accountants, I.T. to Marketing and skilled mechanical engineers.

This is what students of St. Joseph’s College Year 10 English class learnt during a visit to the Samoa Observer’s headquarters at Vaitele yesterday.

Teachers Aitulagi Iosefa and Mea’alofa Tofaeono accompanied the students during a tour of the daily newspaper facility.

They met with the Samoa Observer’s Editor, Mata’afa Keni Lesa and Chief Reporter, Joyetter Luamanu.

Teacher Aitulagi said the students were extremely excited to finally visit where their favourite newspaper was being produced.

It was a great day. They had the chance to learn about Graphics and Layout work, meet the Samoa Observer Online team and see the Printing staff prepare the machine for a run.

Sam Tavita, 15, said he was impressed by the amount of work and people involved in producing a daily newspaper. He was even more impressed by the growth of the Samoa Observer’s online market.

“This tour has been a huge learning experience for me,” he said.

“I know this is exactly what I would want to be doing when I finish school, I want to work here because I know this is a job for me especially now that I am taking Maths and English and it is the topic that we are learning at the moment.”

The last activity of the visit was a group photo which they were told would be published today.
