An elderly man was killed as a result of a stone fight last week.

The Media Officer for the Police, Maotaoalii Kaioneta Kitiona, confirmed his death yesterday.

He said a stone thrown during the fight hit the 53-year-old man and he died on his way to the hospital.

The man’s name is withheld.

His death is one of three unrelated deaths confirmed by the Police yesterday. This takes the Christmas death toll to six – including the three who drowned at Mulinu’u on Saturday.

The second tragedy occurred at Alafua where a 40-year-old man died after he fell from a moving truck. The incident occurred on 22 December but the man died on Christmas day.

Another death was that of a 51-year-old woman who died of a heart attack at a local tourist accommodation provider.

No one has been charged in relation to any of the deaths as the Police are investigating.

New Year Celebrations safety

In the meantime, members of the public are urged to remember that close to 650 Police officers are working throughout the holidays for a safer Samoa.

Last week, Police Commissioner, Fuiavailiili Egon Keil, urged everyone to take extra care.

“Please, if you’re drinking and driving, don’t do it,” he said.

“We’ve got a lot of DUI (driving under the influence) check points out there. There is no tolerance for drunk driving, we will arrest you.”

Fuiava said he understands that there will be many parties and functions but he encourages people to make plans to guarantee their safety and that of others in mind.

“So think twice if you’re drinking and driving,” he said. “Get yourself a designated driver. Utilise our taxis, we’ve got tons of taxis around.”

The Commissioner said the Police are out there to ensure everyone is safe.

“There will be more road blocks. We don’t want to arrest anybody but for the safety of our country, we need to do this.”
