The chiefly title of Pula was bestowed upon two members of the Fuaifale o Pula Iosua and Pula Esau.

They are Pula Faimafili Tulaga and Pula Flo Leota Siaki Wendt.

According to Leaupepe Fatu Pula, it has been 22 years since the title was bestowed upon anyone.

“The two members of the family were chosen by all of us,” he said.

“The family has agreed that it is time to have the title conferred on our family members because it has been a long time since this title has been bestowed.

The official blessing was held at the Methodist Church at Saleimoa, conducted by Reverend Siaki Filo Tuiatua.

Rev. Tuiatua said being bestowed a matai title is not a small thing.

“A matai means burden bearer,” he said. “You will have to carry all the burden of your family. This is something you shouldn’t be taking for granted and lightly because it comes with great responsibilities.

“You have been chosen by your family to serve and carry the burdens of your family.”

Rev. Tuiatua went on to say that the hope of the matai is to have people who honour and respect God.

“A lot of matais in Samoa don’t understand the responsibilities of a matai,” he said.

“Many of the young matais, once bestowed the title then they just sit while the parents serve them their food, I feel sorry for them because they have no idea of the responsibility of being a matai. This is a burden that has been bestowed upon you.

“It is a heavy burden and it’s the measina so make sure don’t let go but be patient to carry it.

“Don’t forget the foundation of all of this is God.

“Be patient with whatever life throws at you because the good and the bad will always be thrown to a matai.”
