We’ve got to move with the times

Change is inevitable and it’s crucial that we understand this so that we can adapt accordingly.

Junior Leiuni, 25, of Matautu Falelatai said these words to the Village Voice team on Friday.

“Technology nowadays makes everything more complicated and leads many, especially the young people, to make bad decision in life,” he said.

“In many families these days, nobody knows how to communicate anymore because everyone is too busy with their phones, Facebook and other social media sites.”

“No matter how the elders tell their children to do chores around the house, it’s difficult because young people nowadays are too busy with their phones.”

“Now we see lots of cyber bullying problems and those cases end up in court because we misuse technology especially handy gadgets.”

“This problem is affecting everyone in the world today.”

Junior says mobile phones and other social media sites are useful but misusing them can be dangerous at the same time.

“Parents should focus and push their children to go to school but not give them those phones,” he said. “Parents should also advise their children that nowadays, it’s harder to get a job, they need to put more time and effort into their school work. If not, we have the land to work on.”

Apart from the rapid changes in the world today, Junior knows that “with the high cost of living, I’m telling you there are so many things that we need but cannot afford.

“I mean even if we can, we have other things to prioritize first like the welfare of our families, children, family fa’alavlelave and others.

“That’s our life from day to day and we can’t escape it.”

But life in the village is great for Junior.

“I mean we always help each other, we share food, taro, fish even salt and sugar.

“That’s the good thing about this village and to me that’s what I love about the village and I prefer living here than in town.

“That’s how life is and honestly life in the village is OK despite the many challenges coming our way but we always help each other,” Junior said.
